On Originality

Do you sometimes ask yourself the question: what if my novel idea isn’t original?

The past few weeks I have seen several writers post about this problem and I thought it was time I’d address that.

Look at fiction. When you take books back to their theme, there are only a few.

What makes your book original is not the theme of the book, it is YOU!

You bring in your own life experiences, your ideas about your characters are all shaped by people you have witnessed or things you pick from yourself. You are the one who writes the words in a way that is unique to you, your voice is shaped by years of crafting stories and it’s now like a fingerprint.

So stop worrying. Write your book. That’s all there is to it.
